sub zero exploration

Christmas is behind us. With all the presents opened and cookies eaten. Now temps are dipping below zero. Tonight it is headed to double digits below zero. No better time to put the rooftop tent and diesel heater to the test.

A few feet of snow cover the ground up at the tent. Another foot covers everything up the Yaak in Montana. Last year I was able to drive forest service roads all winter. They are impassable already this year. This is a good sign for snow pack and wildfires next summer. As for travel in 4 runner this winter though, not good. That means to excess the back roads until April or May, (Timbersled)

I am strapping snowshoes on timber sled in case I need to walk out. This weekend it looks like temperatures will dip to -15. This means if traveling in backcountry be prepared to have to walk out or spend the night.

I will carry my one person tent with me in my backpack. A 20 below sleeping bag will also make the journey. Staying overnight in below zero temperatures is not a desire of mine. Although if a situation arises I want to be prepared to do so.
