The snow came down, down, down!

No sooner did the sub zero temperatures subside the snow came down, down, down! Don’t get me wrong I love snow. I had not been to the tent in a week. When I arrived there. I found it in great shape considering. The design of the tent’s rain fly worked perfectly. I placed the rainfly eighteen inches above the canvas roof of the tent. This way the heat from the tent would melt any snow off and take the weight off the roof. When I’m not there to have a fire. The slick tarp I used as the rainfly gave the two feet of snow no grip. It simply slid off. Also by building the tent platform itself thirty inches off the ground it protects the canvas sides from snow. As the snow slides off the roof it falls next to the deck instead of building up against the sides of the tent. The lady who sewed my tent together from Montana Canvas gave me the idea. She suggested I make the deck/platform the same width as the tent so no snow would land on the deck and sit against the canvas sides. Thank you.

My drive into the tent had not faired as well. Two feet of wet snow awaited me. So I gave it a try. I put the 4 runner in 4 wheel low range and engaged the rear locker and A track. I made it a third of the way before getting buried to the frame. As I was about to put my rear winch on. Along came some snowmobilers from up Trestle Creek. Avalanches had cut their day short. As one truck stopped and offered a tow out, I took him up on it. After being pulled out I decided to leave the driveway until cooler temps would solidify it. The next day brought freezing temperatures. I decided to combine fun with work. I started a fire in the wood stove and grabbed the timbersled. I made laps through the woods and over the driveway. After an hour of packing down the driveway as I learned new timbersled techniques of turning, jumping, and crashing I parked the timbersled and got the 4 runner. After deflating the tires down to 15psi for better traction in the snow, I made another attempt on the driveway. This time it crawled it’s way along the drive.

I decided to celebrate with a steak dinner. Also a few beers as I warmed up by the stove I did partake. Needless to say I slept well in the warmth of the tent as more snow fell on Trestle Creek. The next morning I decided to build up my firewood stockpile. The sun was out and the crisp sky was beautiful. After cutting, splitting and stacking a generous amount of wood I headed off to play on the timbersled.

Now when I arrive back at the tent from my work week it will be prepped for a fire and most likely more steak and potatoes.

This weekend after checking the avalanche report. I will head up into the mountains on the timbersled to see what awaits.

  1. Really like the snowbike!, if we got more snow back here I would seriously consider getting one. Dinner looked tasty but camping in a tent in the middle of winter??, my inner boyscout is not up to that challenge.
